1986 F150 4X4 LONG BED
-
The power unit in this vehicle is a carbureted, naturally aspirated 300 cubic inch straight-six. Renown for its simplicity and reliability, this engine is known to regularly achieve 300,000 miles without issue.
-
The T-18 gearbox is a four-speed manual with a granny first gear. The low gear ratio of first gear combined with the low-end torque of the in-line six engine creates an excellent platform for navigating off-road terrain with ease.
The objective of this project is to create a template for an affordable overland vehicle from the classic American truck market. Reliability and reparability will be the cornerstones of this build. To achieve this, the powertrain will remain relatively stock, while off-road capability will be bolstered primarily through readily available bolt-on components. From the factory, the 300 in-line six engine is optimized for low-end torque and when mated with Ford’s four-speed manual gearbox, it is able to navigate rocky terrain with ease. The interior and exterior of the vehicle will be thoroughly restored to near-stock configuration. Modifications will be made to increase comfort and driveability for modern roadways.
